As the largest French motorway operator, the ASF Group (Autoroutes du Sud de la France) has put its faith for years in the proven hardware components of MICROSENS. During the large-scale project for toll stations, solutions from MICROSENS were used across a wide area. Originally, many toll stations were only equipped with PCs. In the course of the modernisation of the stations and of many new investments, the services of these have been substantially expanded over the last few years. In addition to typical control data for the access barriers that are connected directly via fibre optic converters, the till machines and the video cameras were also connected to the IP network. In one of the next stages of development, the additional connection of the voice services via VoIP telephony is planned.

As part of the connection of numerous toll stations, a quick-reacting and dedicated network structure was established. Through specific traffic management and control, a high level of safety is ensured 7 days a week at any time of day or night. The entire ASF network is divided into 36 areas, whereby each sub-area covers between 50 and 120 km of motorways and is connected via a ring structure to the seven regional administration centres (D.R.E. Valence, Orange, Narbonne, Biarritz, Agen, Brive and Niort). In turn, these regional centres ensure global network coordination and are networked with the main control and service centres of the ASF in Valencia.

To guarantee smooth data transmission over such great distances, only fibre optic can be considered as a suitable data transmission medium. Due to the constant expansion of the network structures, the operators were looking for an open transmission platform. The modular system of MICROSENS with its broad variety of electro-optical converters was able to fulfill all these parameters. The data of the regional administration centres was thus networked with the main centre optically via Gigabit Ethernet fibre optic converters.

Thanks to the comprehensive product line from MICROSENS, the ASF Group could also draw on the competence of the German manufacturer for a completely different project, as part of the long-range connections. In the linking up of the two cities of Agen and Avignon, the task was to enable transmission of high data rates in the Gigabit range over a distance of approx. 470 km. It was possible to realise this successfully with the help of special transponders with signal regeneration, combined with optimised active optical technologies. The solutions used by ASF for the optical data transfer are used as standard by many European telecommunication suppliers.

In accordance with the modern orientation of the PSA Group, fibre optics were defined as the uniform transmission medium for the connection of industrial work environments, the realisation of extensive distances and networking of office environments.

Via these, numerous robots, machines and controls are directly connected with the network via the fibre optic connections. In the production sites, each vehicle chassis on the assembly line is given proper identification immediately after it has been painted. From this moment, all criteria regarding the vehicle are recorded, such as the type of motorisation, the equipment options and also the name of the future owner.

Furthermore, a fibre-to-the desk concept was defined for the office environment. For safety reasons, each individual terminal is connected in a dedicated manner to the central distributor. For the connection of the workplace computers to the fibre optic network, each computer is equipped with an internal fibre optic converter card. This converter is installed in the computer, without the system needing to be changed, and connected with the existing network connection of the computer via a short twisted-pair cable. Time-consuming reconfiguration or reinstallation of network drivers is thus no longer necessary at all. For the direct connection of peripheral systems, installation converters were specially designed by MICROSENS for PSA Peugeot Citroën and these have been integrated into the already existing installation instead of the passive socket.
